STEP 3: In the comment box below, share your biggest question (or concern) with training and selling horses for profit...

Post your question:

  1. Where do you buy them and where do you sell them? Also what breed sells the best?

  2. How to minimize any potential losses especially when you are making very little money working as an assistant and just trying to get ahead.

  3. Does this cost me anything to watch?

  4. Are the horses you're choosing discipline specific, and how does that effect your clientele and training?

  5. Are the type of horses you're choosing to re sale specific to a discipline or are they versatile, and how does that effect your training and clientele?

  6. How do you get a horse sold that has high value but no one seems interested in purchasing it?

  7. When shopping for the project horses, what do you tell the sellers? That you are buying to resell? For me this is an awkward moment. Thanks!

  8. I grew up with horses all my life. My grandfather ran well over 100 head of horses. I have always wanted a career in the equine industry, but have pretty much been laughed at and told it will never happen, “there’s no money in horses!” Unfortunately, I just really struggle to believe some of this negativity. Even though my grandfather has passed on, we still have a breeding program, but much smaller. My question is, is it possible to make a profit by using your own breeding stock? I recognize that by doing this, I will be keeping horses longer so I will be putting more time and money into them, so curious if it is possible. Please keep in mind, yes I do like my stock, and I do try to continue introducing new reining/cow horse lines in, but they aren’t level 4 open prospects and I am not a level 4 open trainer… (my horses are primarily POAs) I simply want to remain a non pro and breed/raise/train/show my own stock because I know I can’t afford a prospect from the nrha futurity sale or western bloodstock sale.

  9. What’s your biggest “yes” to purchasing a project horse & your biggest “NO”. What’s an absolute deal breaker right off the bat?

  10. Where do you select where to sell and build a reputable standing for repeat customers? What would you suggest for individuals with under $5,000 investment funds and have to board during this process?

  11. What do you look for in your project horse? Age, confirmation, breeding, or simply a feeling about the horse?

  12. Determining horse value. Market? Region?

  13. My biggest concern is choosing and buying the right project horse-so many problems out there.

  14. Where is the best place to buy a project horse?

  15. In looking into your project horse, what are things like bad habits that you can spot right away. That you would say scare people away instead of taking time to understand the horse

  16. What are the best tips on picking a project horse for best return on investment?

  17. What are your criteria for choosing horses

  18. If I am selling a horse that isn’t “finished” or perfectly broke how do I do that knowing it could look bad on my name? I am not educated enough to get a horse very broke and responsive under saddle but I am seeking to also get educated on it

  19. How do I train one horse with your tips and other horses are near by, too?

  20. My first project is still in my barn and it has been over a year. When do you cut the loss?
