Steve Ross
Steve used to be an unknown, broke horse trainer who had good skill, but a broken business. Today, he is a world-renowned announcer and horse business lifer. Some say, you could pick a random spot on a world map, and Steve would have a profitable business in less than a year. For 47 years, Steve has been in the horse industy and knows exactly what works and what doesn't.

(I'm hoping this question comes through, I've had some technical difficulties while trying to ask and this is my 3rd attempt). When looking for prospect horses (especially reiners) what are some of the key characteristics you look for, and what are some deal breakers, and what sales, breeders, and barns do you recommend looking for these horses at? I'm currently working with a 4 year old APHA gelding project horse I'm planning on selling as a 4-H project horse or all around family horse, and then using those funds to purchase a prospect for the show pen. Ultimately my goal is to trade/sell my way up to the caliber of horse needed to show at the Cactus Classic, and qualify for the Run for a Million. What are some things you recommend doing or not doing to accomplish this goal, knowing we're aiming high?
Regarding purchasing and selling prospect horses (especially reiners), what are some key factors you look for with these prospects, and what sales, breeders, and barns do you recommend for a trainer to search for these horses at? I'm currently working with a 4 year old APHA registered gelding that I plan to sell as a 4-H project horse or as all around family horse due to his temperament and overall riding ability/athleticism, and intend to use the money from his sale to find prospects for the reining pen with the ultimate goal of selling/trading my way up to having the caliber of horses needed to show at the Cactus Classic, and aiming to qualify for the Run for a Million. What advice do you have to make this goal happen, understanding we're aiming as high as we can?
How do you find the best home for your horse, and still be able to get your price? I have turned down higher prices, from less than stellar homes, and ended up selling way below value, to get a better home for some of my home bred horses, I raised, and started under saddle.
Regarding the purchase and sale of project horses, what are some of the most important factors you look for in the purchase of project horses in the reining market, and what sales, breeders, and barns do you recommend going to for the sale and purchase of these horses? I currently have a 4 year old APHA gelding I'm putting some time into before I plan to sell (likely to be sold as a 4-H kids horse project or just all around family horse due to his temperament and general riding ability), and I plan to purchase prospects for the reining pen. Ultimately, my goal is to trade and sell my way up to purchasing the caliber of horse I can bring to the Cactus Classic and take a shot for the Run for a Million.
I prefer ground training for at lea six weeks. Are more dependent on the horse. And how do we retain what he has already learned
