Meet Your Presenter:
Steve Ross
Steve used to be an unknown, broke horse trainer who had good skill, but a broken business. Today, he is a world-renowned announcer and horse business lifer. Some say, you could pick a random spot on a world map, and Steve would have a profitable business in less than a year. Since his early 20s, he's flipped hundreds of horses at a profit and wants to show you how anyone can do it.
Can this be profitable if you must board the horse?
I am particularly interested in your answer to the question “what to look for” as well as, with the market as it currently to is, where to look for the right candidate?
Geographical location to breed… what breed sells best in various areas of the country? I.e. gaited in the south
Coming from a rescue/ rehab/ rehome background, how do I avoid getting attached & wanting to keep EVERYTHING!!???
How to market/ network to avoid the negative associations ppl have with “horse flippers”.
Best place to sell
Where is the best source for potential horses?
Characteristics that are mandatory for a good flip prospect
What do I do when a horse has a jekyll and Hyde personality? Particularly a biter who didn't show this issue before purchase. Now I question the safety of prospective new owners.
I’ve flipped horses casually before but my biggest question in the market today is what kind of horse is selling the best ? English, western , trail riding ? And with the crazy all over the place prices what price points (bought and sold) are the best to profit off of? Lol sorry I guess that was two questions!
Pricing grade vs. papered horses.
How to cater to market that is eastern riding-heavy.
I would like to get where you are, Steve. I’d like to be recognized in my area (eastern Montana) as a person who can be trusted and that I have a steady stream of really nice horses for people to try. I’m struggling finding the high quality horses you have access to. You mentioned you’re selling most for $25K. I cannot even find a nice reject reiner for $20K. I wish I could. I’ve spent copious hours on social media looking. I’m part of so many horse groups. I’m spending more time on my computer than riding so that I don’t miss that horse that I can really make a profit on. So how can I get my foot in the door with those who have these $15k to $20k reining rejects? We raise a few but they’re selling as weanlings for decent enough money. I just can’t seem to find those really nice horses. I know what I want but I cannot find them. Any help or even an idea or two would be much appreciated.
If you are an experienced trainer what is more profitable: breaking out a young horse and teaching it correctly and then selling it, or buying a broke horse that needs a tune up and then selling it?
1. How do you handle horses (geldings) that end up having a major physical or behavior issue (that wasn’t discoverable until you started working with them) that doesn’t make them a fit for most people… while still doing the best thing for the horse (not dumping them at a sale barn). 2. How do you weed out/deal with crazy people or those that might be tire kickers or very wasteful with your time? I enjoy polishing up project horses but not dealing with (most) people as much.
What/where are the best places to offer your flipped horse or horse related items for sale?
How to pick the correct project
Finding the right color/age/level of training
How much time should be spent improving these flip horses before selling? What's the best way to advertise sale horses?
How to be a better judge of confirmation. U
